PR1 TRANSNATIONAL EXPLORATIVE RESEARCH- Insights from the DIGITAIL Project

In an age where technology has become an integral part of our daily lives, the retail sector has found itself at a crossroads. The traditional brick-and-mortar approach is no longer sufficient to meet the evolving demands of consumers. Recognizing the need to address these challenges head-on, the DIGITAIL project embarked on a journey to uncover the current state of digitalization within the retail sector across four partner countries.

The transnational report unveiled as the first project result of DIGITAIL serves as a testament to the project’s dedication to shedding light on the ever-changing landscape of the retail industry. Through a meticulous blend of national forums and insightful interviews, the project engaged with key stakeholders responsible for driving retail businesses across these nations.

At its core, the DIGITAIL project aimed to define the present status quo of digitalization in the retail sector. This encompassed an exploration of the challenges, obstacles, and real-world scenarios faced by businesses in these four partner countries. Even before the pandemic gripped the world, a staggering 70% of retailers, particularly micro-sized businesses, lacked an online presence or e-commerce offerings. The significance of a digital presence had become a survival imperative.

The journey towards embracing digitalization for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is not without its hurdles. These businesses often lack the resources and technical know-how required for a seamless transition into the digital realm. The DIGITAIL project recognized this need for dedicated support, technical guidance, and simplified tools to help SMEs establish a substantial online presence without exhaustive investments.

As a response to these challenges, the DIGITAIL Project Result 1 (PR1) is set to provide a comprehensive depiction of the current EU business reality from the perspective of retail companies. By doing so, it aims to offer viable solutions to confront the novel challenges posed by digitalization. The findings amassed through this transnational research process have been synthesized and collated by the consortium, serving as a foundation for future development efforts.

The DIGITAIL project’s trajectory extends beyond observation and analysis. Two pivotal outcomes, Project Results 2 and 3, are poised to drive impactful change within the retail sector. PR2, the DIGITAIL training program and curriculum, is set to be the project’s core output. This modular course is meticulously designed to empower retail professionals with the necessary competences, knowledge, and practical experiences to navigate the intricate landscape of digitalization. By equipping retail sector leaders with the tools they need, PR2 sets the stage for businesses to embark on their digital transformation journey with confidence.

Meanwhile, the Project Result 3 (PR3) holds immense promise in the form of a comprehensive handbook titled “Digitalization of Retail Sector – Concepts, Methods, Practical Application.” Tailored to resonate with the language and preferences of retail companies, this handbook is poised to become a trusted guide for sector managers, business owners, HR staff, and decision-makers. It outlines the intricacies of planning, implementing, and evaluating digitalization processes within companies. The handbook’s development journey draws directly from the insights gleaned from the Explorative Research Report, ensuring its alignment with the real-world dynamics of businesses.

In conclusion, the DIGITAIL project’s inaugural transnational report lays the groundwork for an era of transformation within the retail sector. By unraveling the challenges and opportunities associated with digitalization, the project serves as a beacon of hope for businesses seeking to thrive in the digital age. As the project progresses and its outcomes take shape, the retail industry stands poised to not only adapt to change but to lead it.
